Unfortunately, it’s clear that the US government is not in a position to
make reasonable and responsible decisions related to genetically engineered
foods at this point. The fact that the former Monsanto attorney and Vice
President,Michael Taylor, is now in charge of US food safety has left many of us
scratching our heads.
And serious conflicts of interest even
reign supreme within the US Supreme Court! That’s right. Supreme Court Justice
Clarence Thomas is also a former Monsanto attorney, but refuses to
acknowledge any conflict of interest.
GMOs are Almost Everywhere
Many of us have come to the conclusion that our regulatory agencies are
lacking and we need to look out for ourselves. It's very difficult
to avoid GMOs today. According to the Center for Food Safety the genetic
engineering of plants and animals is looming as one of the greatest and most
intractable environmental challenges of the 21st Century.
Currently, up
to 85%
of U.S. corn is genetically engineered (GE), as are
91% of soybeans and 88% of cotton (cottonseed oil is often used in food
products). It has been estimated that upwards of 75%
of processed foods on supermarket shelves – from soda
to soup, crackers to condiments – contain genetically engineered ingredients. -centerforfoodsafety.org/
